Manual de
Juzgamiento
introduCtion
We can define a manual as an instruction guide that is used to establish the co-
rrect work procedures. Reducing the field of action and limiting it to our specific
activity, color canariculture, it is the set of standards and judging criteria that
judges must take into account when choosing the best specimen in a contest.
It is a fundamental tool not only for those responsible for the prosecutions, but
also for all breeders, since it is a manual that describes, in summary, the ideal
specimen of each color of canaries that we could breed and are approved by
our college.
About that, we must differentiate clearly the standard bird and the champion
bird. Many breeders still believe that they represent the same figure, but in
practice they do not. Those specimens that are winners of any type of compe-
titive contest, are not the perfect specimens, but are those birds whose phe-
notypic characteristics are closer to the ideal stipulated by the standard, with
respect to their adversaries within the same category.
The judges mark the differences between the ideal and the champion through
the score of the canaries. Since this standard bird should be represented by the
theoretical 100 points, while the specimens, in practice, cannot receive more
than 95 points (96 in the case of white and albino) and they can be considered
champions with a minimum of 90 points. In other words, a bird penalized with
10% of its total score may still be called champion, despite having considerable
defects that merit a discount of 10 points from its total.
